UNESCO is a unique organization dedicated to preserving the cultural values of humanity and safeguarding its global heritage. Since November 16, 1945, this prestigious body has been taking the world’s most magnificent, historically rich monuments and natural sanctuaries under its protection—a list that continues to grow every year. Once added to the UNESCO registry, various global sacred sites and museum-reserves are placed under international protection and continuous monitoring.
Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pays special attention to the inclusion of Kazakhstan’s historical sites into the UNESCO list, keeping the matter under his personal supervision. Speaking at the 5th meeting of the National Kurultai, the President highlighted several unique heritage sites worthy of being part of the world’s cultural treasure trove:
“Our country is rich in historical sites and valuable artifacts of profound educational and inspirational significance. Our scientists have discovered a total of 17,000 petroglyphs in the Sauyskandyk area of the Kyzylorda region and along the Arpa River in the Turkistan region. I believe that such priceless monuments, along with our national traditions, truly deserve a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List,” the President stated.
Currently, Kazakhstan boasts 11 historical sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Among these unique locations are the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, the Petroglyphs of Tanbaly, Saryarka — Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan, as well as the ancient settlements of Koylyk, Karamergen, and Talgar.
Global Leaders in UNESCO Heritage Sites
The countries with the highest number of cultural and natural sites inscribed on the UNESCO list are Italy and China, each boasting 55 sites. They are followed by:
Spain — 48 sites
Germany — 46 sites
France — 45 sites
Given the abundance of cultural sites and natural reserves across our country, there is no doubt that the number of Kazakhstani monuments under the aegis of UNESCO will continue to rise in the future
